Summary: Hikaru was rushing to the class. Kota asked him why and his answer made Kota laughed till tears but he instantly stopped when Hikaru explained. What made him turned to serious? Why would Hikaru ran to class? Yaotome Hikaru, 17 was running from the hallway to the class and instantly stopped when Yabu Kota, 17 was standing at the entrance of the class.
“What happen?” Kota asked, held himself and leaned backward to the wall.
“There’s...” Hikaru stopped to gasp air, looking down while his right hand was holding the wall. He was sweating, could be seen through his wet forehead.
“Thief?” Kota asked, started to worry, looking at Hikaru condition. It must be something serious. Hikaru shook his head, still had difficulty in breathing but it was getting better.
“Accident?” Kota asked again. He was curious and unsatisfied with Hikaru’s incomplete answer.
“Kitten,” Hikaru answered at last after a few of normal breaths. Kota burst into a very loud laugh, holding his stomach and his other hand was clapping loudly at the wall. Hikaru was annoyed. He was being serious and Kota was laughing over what he said.
“Listen! I’m scare of cats but I will never run like insane guy when I meet them,” Hikaru said, almost shouting, showing he was irritated with Kota’s non-stop laughter.
“Okay. I’m sorry,” said Kota, trying to stop the laugh. He wiped the tears formed at the side of his eyes due to excessive laugh.
“The kitten that we save last week jump into the pond,” Hikaru explained the real situation at last. Kota instantly changed his expression, worried.
“Miruku?” Kota asked to confirm. Hikaru nodded his head vigorously.
“Why don’t you save him?” Kota said in serious tone and quickly rushed to the pond.
“I couldn’t,” Hikaru answered and followed Kota’s steps. Kota reached the pond. The water was so calm. The water was dark green, full of algae. How could he find Miruku in this situation? Kota didn’t think long before he stepped in the knee-length water.
“Kota,” Hikaru called when he saw Kota was walking in the pond. He knew how Kota love animals especially kittens but he never thought Kota was willing to do this.
Kota ignored Hikaru’s call. Suddenly, he felt something at his feet. He bowed down and put his both hands to take it out.
“Miruku!” Hikaru shouted when he saw Kota was holding a small white furry figure.
Kota felt a burden in his chest when he saw the unmoved kitten in his hand. He was frozen until he heard Hikaru was shouting his name.
“Kota! Quick! Bring him here!” Hikaru shouted. He looked really worried. He didn’t like cats but some how he had developed affection towards Miruku.
Kota quickly walked towards Hikaru. The water slowed his movement and it felt like forever to reach to the edge of the pond. Hikaru helped him stepped out of the pond but he still didn’t dare to touch the little Miruku.
Kota sat on the ground and placed Miruku on his lap. He examined him, touching the pink little nose, pressing the round stomach and opening the mouth. Kota acted like a real veterinarian. Hikaru was squatting before Kota, waiting for the result. Kota ended with a sigh.
“How’s he?” Hikaru asked, worried.
“I think we are too late,” Kota said, regret maybe.
“Poor Miruku,” Hikaru said his name for the first time and Kota noticed it.
“I never thought you will care about Miruku that much,” Kota said, sarcastically.
“Of course, I do. I found him and save him. Remember?” Hikaru was annoyed. Kota chuckled, hearing Hikaru explanation.
“Let’s bury him,” Kota stood up and brought Miruku away.
“Where?” Hikaru asked, standing up, followed right behind Kota.
“Beside his sibling,” Kota said, answering to Hikaru question without turning back.
After burying the little friend, both of them squatted beside his grave.
“I wonder why he jumped into that pond,” Hikaru asked, confused.
“Suicide?” Kota answered although he, himself was not sure.
“Why would he want to kill himself?” Hikaru asked again. He had become even more curious.
“Remember when we found him lying on the road with Kuro?” Kota asked. Kuro was the name of Miruku sibling. Hikaru nodded his head once and looked at Kota, waiting for more words.
“He was looking intensely at Kuro at that time although he was injured badly. He didn’t even cry. Maybe he wanted to be with Kuro,” Kota explained.
“Oh, I see. Poor Miruku. He must be lonely,” Hikaru said, looking at the grave. Kota stood up and patted Hikaru hair before he walked away.
“Kota, wait!” Hikaru quickly rushed to Kota who was waiting for him from a few metres away. Hikaru stopped. He suddenly imagined how Miruku was looking at Kuro who was waiting for him from heaven. Hikaru smiled and continued his pace to Kota.
“Kota, let’s be like Miruku and Kuro,” Hikaru suddenly said while patting Kota’s shoulder. Kota didn’t show any shock expression but he nodded instead. Hikaru smiled, happy.
